Employers
People with ELCs may face challenges in employment, whether diagnosed before or during their career. These difficulties stem from both daily symptoms and social barriers.
Misunderstanding and stigma in the workplace can lead to:
- Feeling unable to identify as disabled
- Hesitation to seek support due to fear of disbelief
- Not accessing necessary disability support or adjustments
- Masking difficulties, leading to burnout and presenteeism
- Strained relationships with colleagues
- Pushing through symptoms, worsening health
- Extended sickness absence
- Leaving work due to lack of support
Addressing these issues with understanding and appropriate adjustments can create a more supportive work environment.
It is worth remembering that ELCs are covered under the terms of the Disability Discrimination Act 2010, and therefore employees are eligible for reasonable adjustments. If you feel that you need adjustments to enable you to stay in employment, you should speak to your employer. People with ELCs are also eligible to apply for Access to Work funding to enable them to remain in employment.
