Bathroom 2

Perching Stool - bathroom

I want to...

  • be able to wash safely at the sink

  • I need help to stand at the sink

Benefits

Perching stools are beneficial if you are unable to stand for a period of time. They allow you to take some of the pressure off your legs and back, whilst still remaining at a reasonable height for certain household tasks, including washing. They are usually height adjustable, meaning the height can be set to suit you. Depending on the bathroom layout, some people prefer to sit on the toilet to wash.

Things to consider

  • It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and make sure this equipment is secure.
  • Weight restrictions apply.
  • You could find that perching stools pose a trip hazard, as the legs splay out, as opposed to being straight/vertical to the floor. If you fall or trip regularly, this equipment may not be suitable.
  • Perching stools can be cumbersome to move, so care needs to be taken about where it is placed, and whether you can move it yourself if needed, or someone is available to help you.
  • You also need to consider the person's sitting balance; good sitting balance is needed to use these safely.
