Smart Doorlock
I want information about...
- answering the door
- opening the door
- home security
What can it be used for?
A smart door lock is a type of electronic lock that lets you lock and unlock your door without using a traditional key. Instead, you can use things like:
- A smartphone app
- A keypad with a code
- A fingerprint
- A key fob or card
- Voice commands (if connected to a smart assistant like Alexa or Google Assistant)
Some smart locks can also:
- Send alerts to your phone when someone locks or unlocks the door
- Let you give temporary access to guests, cleaners, or carers
- Work with other smart home devices, like cameras or alarms
They’re often used to make homes more secure and convenient, especially for people who want to manage access remotely, have difficulty locking or unlocking the door or want to avoid carrying keys.
These types of locks or door entry systems can be purchased from locksmiths or home security companies or search on the internet for 'telecare door entry', 'intercom system' or 'smart home door lock'.
Benefits
- Increased Independence: If the person who will use it is unable to lock and unlock the door easily, remote door locks could mean this could be done more easily using a smartphone, key fob or remote control. This means that a key isn't required.
- Safety: Some versions have the ability to have different access codes for different family members/ friends/ care providers. Some intercom versions have the ability to see the person on a screen before letting them in.
Things to Consider
- Installation: Think about how the lock will be installed. Is there someone who can do this or is this provided by the company who sells them. If not will this need to be arranged and paid for separately?
- Security: Check their security features, they may offer encryption protocols which will need to be updated to ensure security remains high. Check how this works and whether there are costs included. Is there a service to fix the lock quickly if it breaks and is the person whose house it is able to recognise if the lock isn't working and access support for this.
- Compatibility: Can the lock be fitted to the current door and will it work with the way the door opens. If linking to smart devices ensure they are compatible.
- Suitability: There are different versions of remote door locks. Think about how the door can be locked and unlocked with the different versions and make sure this will work for the person who will be using it and the type of door they have. They also have different types of connection depending on how they will be controlled, check if anything else such as Wi-Fi is required.
- Contingency plan: If the door lock will be connected to a smart speaker consider what would happen if the power or Wi-Fi went down, particularly if there was a fire. Is there an option to use a code or an emergency release.
- Cost and value for money: They are more expensive than most traditional locks so consider whether this is the best option and there isn't a cheaper options that hasn't been considered, such as a key turner (see Additional Resources section). Are there any ongoing charges? Do they require regular battery changes and how much will the batteries cost? What is the customer support like?
