Curtain / Blind Opener
I want information about...
- how to open/close curtains or blinds
What can it be used for?
A curtain or blind opener is a device which attaches to your curtain rail or a blind and can be used to open and close your curtains or blinds in different ways. Depending on the type and the functions, curtain or blind openers can be controlled through:
- using a remote control
- setting them to open and close at a pre-set time
- closing automatically when it gets dark by linking to a light sensor
- closing automatically when it is cold by linking to a temperature sensor
- speaking certain phrases through a linked smart speaker
- a smartphone or tablet - usually through an app
You can find and buy these and similar products by searching 'smart curtain openers' or 'smart blind openers' on the internet. Some shops that sell curtains and curtain rails also now stock these products.
Benefits
- Convenience: Open and close blinds and/or curtains more easily.
- Increased independence: Curtains can be opened and closed even when they can't be accessed for example if the person who will use it isn't able to get to the window because of difficulty walking. Curtains can be opened and closed more safely even if the person has difficulty with grip, balance or co-ordination.
- Security and money saving: Blinds or curtains can be opened or closed even when the person who will be using it isn't at home, so it can look like someone is at home when they aren't. Blinds or curtains can be linked to a light sensor and set up to close when it gets dark ensuring that heat is kept in the house.
Things to Consider
- Ease of use: Choose a curtain/blind opener that is easy to set up and use. User-friendly apps and clear instructions can make a big difference. Check reviews and comparison websites.
- Suitability: Check the product is compatible with the type of curtain / curtain rail or blind it will be used with. Will it be able to pull the blinds or curtains if they are particularly heavy? Does it fit on the rail you have? What does it need to do? How does it need to be controlled? If you need a remote control does this come with it? Does it have built in sensors or will these need to be purchased separately? Different ones work in different ways.
- Compatibility: Make sure it is compatible with any devices it will be used with such as your smart speaker or your smartphone or tablet.
- Type of connection required: Does the curtain/blind opener require home internet usually Wi-Fi and is this in place or does it work through Bluetooth or a remote control. Connecting through Wi-Fi usually means the opener can be controlled even when not nearby, connecting through Bluetooth or by remote control usually means the person controlling it will need to be in the same room as the opener. If it uses internet, check the Wi-Fi requirements, some openers only work on 2.4 GHz networks, so make sure your router supports this. If you are unsure, check with the internet supplier.
- Installation: How is the product installed? Is there someone who can do this or will support be needed with this such as from a handyperson. Most openers just clip on but some might be more complicated to install so it's important to check.
