Easy to use Tablet

I want information about...

  • tablets that are easy to use
  • communicating with family and friends
  • accessing the internet and using apps for entertainment

What can it be used for?

A tablet is similar to a smartphone, but with a larger screen. It is a portable, flat device, with a touchscreen. An easy to use tablet is one that is simpler to use and which can often be set up specifically for what the person is going to use it for. They can be used to:

  • access the internet
  • use apps - meaning that with all the different apps available, a tablet can help you do lots of different things including: talk to people, learn new things, stay organised, be healthier, have fun, and control devices such as smart lights in the home
  • play games
  • make phone or video calls dependent on their connectivity (for more information, see 'General considerations for using gadgets, tools and technology in your home' on the homepage)
  • set up reminders or use an electronic calendar
  • listen to music, watch videos or read e-books

You can find and buy these and similar products by searching 'easy to use tablet' or 'basic tablet' on the internet. You can also purchase them at shops that sell standard tablets.

Benefits

  • Increased Independence: These tablets are easier to use than standard tablets and often have fewer functions meaning that even where someone only has limited ability to use technology they might be able to use them. They can usually be set up specifically for the person with the apps they use regularly clearly displayed and easy to access. This means that they can use them more independently.
  • Improved Communication: Can help make communication easier with family and caregivers through video calls and messaging apps.
  • Routine Support: Some tablets can help manage daily routines with reminders for medications, appointments, and activities, displaying time clearly to assist users.
  • Entertainment: Provides access to music, videos, and e-books. Often can display photographs to help reduce the feeling of social isolation.

Things to Consider

  • Ease of Use: Ensure the tablet is easy to use. Is it easy to understand, set up and is there someone to help with this if needed?
  • Suitability: Does it come with a charger, how long will it last on one charge? Does it come with pre-installed apps and content specifically designed for what the person wants to use it for? Are additional apps paid for or can they be downloaded for free?
  • Upkeep: Who will make sure all security and updates are installed on it? Its important that updates are installed to keep the device safe.
  • Connectivity: Does it need to be connected to the internet to work? Will it be used through Wi-Fi or is a SIM card version required with internet? If it's going to be used to make phone or video calls, it will either need to be connected to the internet and an internet based messaging app used or to have a SIM card which enables phone calls in the same way a mobile phone does.
  • Durability: Think about how well it will withstand accidental drops or spills. If this is a risk, can a case be used to protect the tablet
  • Cost and Value for money: Prices can vary and more expensive versions may come with additional features. Does it have good warranty and customer service support?
