Recordable Buttons

I want information about...

  • better communication
  • reminders

What can it be used for?

These are large buttons, usually around the size of the palm of an adult hand, that can have a short message recorded on them which plays when the button is pressed. There are also smaller versions which have a keyring attached. Some have a removable clear cover that allows words, pictures or symbols to be displayed to match what the button says. They often come in packs of multiple buttons in different colours. They can be used in a variety of ways:

  • To record a phrase that a person who can't communicate by speaking might want to say regularly e.g. 'I am hungry'
  • Having information recorded on the button about their day by a support person which the person can then play to family/ friends
  • Where someone can communication by speaking with those who know them well but has difficulty with strangers their support person could record a message with them before leaving home and they could play it while out in the community
  • If someone lacks confidence or is anxious speaking to strangers they could record what they might want to say while at home and then use the button while they are out
  • A reminder being recorded and the button placed near to where a task needs to be completed e.g. instructions for heating a meal next to the microwave
