SMART plugs and remote plugs

I want information about....

  • how to turn items on and off when I can't reach the plug socket
  • how to turn items on and off when I'm away from home

What can it be used for?

A smart plug is a small device that plugs into an electrical socket which any electrical item can then be plugged into. It can then be used to turn the electrical item, for example, a lamp, on and off either through:

You can find and buy these and similar products by searching for 'smart plugs' on the internet. Many shops that sell home improvement or electrical products also now stock smart plugs.

Benefits

  • Convenience: can make any item that is plugged into it a smart item so that it can be controlled more easily in a variety of ways.
  • Increased independence: Electrical items can be switched on and off even when the plug socket or item switches can't be accessed. This gives increased choice and control over when electrical items are switched on and off rather than relying on others. It also enables items to be turned on before walking to them so if someone can't stand for long the item could be working before they get there.
  • Security and money saving: Provide the ability to turn electrical items on and off when needed even if not at home if they have this function rather than having to leave them on all the time which can save money.

Things to Consider

  • Ease of use: How easy is it to set up and use? User-friendly apps and clear instructions can make a big difference. Check reviews or comparison websites.
  • Suitability: Choose the right type of smart plug for how it will be used. What does it need to do? How does it need to be controlled?
  • Compatibility: Is it compatible with any other devices that it will be used with e.g. smart speaker
  • Safety: Does the person who is going to be using it have the ability to ensure that the item plugged into it is safe to turn on remotely or has a safety feature that prevents it turning on if it's not safe e.g. if using with a kettle ensuring it has water in.
  • Connectivity: Does the plug require home internet (Wi-Fi) and is this in place or does it work through Bluetooth or a remote control. Connecting through Wi-Fi usually means the plug can be controlled even when not nearby, connecting through Bluetooth or by remote control means the person controlling it will usually need to be in the same room as the plug. If it uses internet, check the Wi-Fi requirements, some smart plugs only work on 2.4 GHz networks, so make sure your router supports this. If you are unsure check with the internet supplier.
  • Power Rating: Check the power rating of the smart plug to ensure it can handle the wattage of the devices it will be used with.
