SMART TV

I want information about...

  • watching TV

What can it be used for?

A smart television is one which can be connected to the internet and that has apps. It can be used for:

  • Accessing entertainment streaming apps like BBC iPlayer or Netflix without needing any additional devices.
  • Some have functions similar to a computer or tablet, for example, ability to search the internet for information or use it to connect with people on social media.
  • Using apps to support lifestyle and wellbeing e.g. Yoga videos.
  • Using closed captioning or audio description.
  • Linking to other devices in the home so that they can be controlled through the television or it's remote control.

You can find and buy these and similar products by searching 'smart TV' or 'smart television' on the internet. They can also be purchased from shops which sell televisions. Many televisions sold have this type of technology integrated now so it is worth checking your existing television before looking to purchase one.

Benefits

  • Convenience: To control other smart devices through the TV, e.g. smart lightbulbs
  • Accessibility: To control TV functions through voice activation. This could be built into the TV or it could have the ability to connect to a smart speaker or app. To have access to additional closed captioning or audio description.
  • Money saving: having a smart TV can reduce the need for other devices saving money.

Things to Consider

  • Ease of use: Is it easy to set up and use. Most can be plugged in and will provide guidance through set up but this can vary so it's best to check. Different TV's have different functions and abilities so check whether the functions needed  such as voice control are built in or whether the TV needs to be linked to a smart speaker or app.
  • Suitability: Does it have the functions that are needed? Does it support the apps the person who will use it wants to use the TV for?
  • Compatibility: Make sure it is compatible with any devices it will be used with such as a smart speaker or an app on a smartphone or tablet
  • Money saving and energy efficiency: More energy efficient models will reduce electricity bills and be better for the environment.
  • Connectivity: Does the TV need to be connected to other devices. Does it have the right ports - HDMI/ USB etc. For example, if it will be used for gaming, check if the gaming device needs HDMI 2.1 ports and that the TV has these.
  • Cost and value for money: Consider the budget and which TV is the best value for money. Does it have a good warranty and customer service support? Check reviews and shop around.
