SMART vacuum cleaner/mop
I want information about...
- how to clean my home
What can it be used for?
A robot vacuum cleaner or mop is a device that can be programmed to vacuum and/or mop without needing a person to physically push or control it. Some will only vacuum or mop and some have both functions combined in one device.
They usually have a docking station that they go back to when not in use and this is plugged in to a wall plug socket and charges them for when they are next used. They can usually either be programmed to vacuum and/or mop at a specific time or can be remotely controlled to do these tasks in a variety of ways such as through an app on a smart phone or tablet or a smart speaker.
You can find and buy these and similar products by searching 'robot vacuum cleaner' or 'robot mop' on the internet. Shops that sell vacuum cleaners also now often sell these types of devices.
Benefits
- Convenience: They can operate independently, cleaning the floors day or night based on when programmed. A person doesn't need to be present while the cleaning is taking place.
- Time-saving: Time spent on cleaning is reduced. Many models can be controlled via apps or integrated with smart speakers. Some models empty automatically at their docking station.
- Accessibility: Their compact size allows them to clean under furniture and in tight spaces that a person using a regular vacuum might have difficulty accessing.
- Increased independence: A person who isn't able to physically use a traditional vacuum cleaner or mop might be able to use a robot vacuum or mop.
- Energy Efficiency: They typically use less energy compared to traditional vacuum cleaners.
- Noise Levels: They are usually quieter than standard vacuum cleaners.
Things to Consider
- Ease of use:
- Check if it is easy to use or programme and whether it has the functions that are needed for the home it will be used in.
- Cleaning: Does It need emptying, or would a version that is self-emptying be better? If it requires emptying who will do this? A larger dustbin in the docking station will reduce how often it needs emptying.
- Maintenance: Consider the ease of maintenance, including how often filters, brushes, and other parts will need to be replaced. Some models have washable components, which can save money.
- Suitability:
- Floor Type: Check that the model will work well on the floors you have in the home. Does your home have level floors as these vacuums cannot usually navigate steps.
- Battery Life: Think about how long it would take to vacuum one floor of the house and whether it could clean everywhere required on a single charge. There are versions that will return to a charging dock and then resume cleaning, but these are usually more costly.
- Navigation and Mapping: What is the home layout like and how much furniture is there that may be in the way. Robot hoovers/vacuums generally use sensors to detect items or walls and change direction. Are there likely to be items on the floor that might be sucked up and clog the vacuum, if so is there someone who can clear these before the vacuum is used. Is a version required that can navigate around the home to avoid getting stuck? Advanced models can do this better but are more expensive.
- Suction Power: A higher suction power may be needed for floors with thick carpets and if there are any pets that shed hair.
- Compatibility: Make sure it is compatible with any devices it will be used with such as a smart speaker or an app on a smartphone or tablet.
- Cost and value for money: Prices can vary so consider your budget and what you need it to do. Research different brands and read user reviews to get an idea of reliability and performance.
- Pets: If there are pets in the home will they be okay with the vacuum or does there need to be someone who can move them out of the way before cleaning takes place.
