Speech / Text Translator Pen

I want information about...

  • translating written information into my language
  • changing written information into spoken information

What can it be used for?

A small device that can either:
Scan written text and read it out loud
or
Scan written text and translate it into another language (reading it out in that language)

Some devices have the ability to do both of these functions.
Some devices can connect to headphones.
Some devices have additional features such as translating spoken language or recording spoken language.

You can find and buy these and similar products by searching 'translator device or pen', 'text to speech device or pen' or 'translator text to speech device or pen' on the internet. Some shops that sell technology sell these kinds of devices.

Benefits

  • Communication: can help with overcoming barriers to understanding written information. Translation pens can provide instant translations and help with correct pronunciation. Text to speech pens can speak out written language to overcome difficulties with reading. Some pens can do both.
  • Increased Independence: can mean that the person using it can follow written instructions or understand letters or information even if they can't read or understand the language it is written in.
  • Convenience: They are small and can be carried around to be used whenever needed.

Things to Consider

  • Compatibility: If the device will be used with headphones check it is compatible with the headphones owned.
  • Suitability: What does the device need to do? Is it just for translation or for text to speech as well? Does one device offer both of these functions? If the device needs to translate a particular language does it offer the language or languages required? Think about the batteries it needs and how long they will last. Could rechargeable ones be used? Who will make sure batteries are replaced or recharged? Does the device need to translate spoken language as well as written language? Will it need to record information to listen to/ translate later? If so check the device has these functions.
  • Ease of use: Is it simple and easy to use? If help is needed who can provide this? Does it need Wi-Fi to work or will it work without
  • Cost and Value for money: More expensive versions often come with additional features such as access to a dictionary. Are these features needed?
