Indoor Security Camera
I want information about...
- home security and peace of mind
What can it be used for?
A home security camera is a device you put inside or outside your house to help keep it safe. It watches what’s happening and can record video of people, animals, or anything else that moves nearby. A smart camera is a type of video camera that can connect to the internet and do more than just record video. They are often used to help with security or monitoring.
These types of camera can often:
- Send alerts to your phone if they see movement.
- Let you watch live video from anywhere using an app.
- Store recordings online (in the cloud) or on a memory card.
- Recognise faces or objects (some advanced models).
- Work with other smart devices, like lights or alarms.
Search 'home security camera systems' or 'smart camera' on the internet.
Benefits
- Peace of Mind: Knowing the home is being monitored can provide a sense of security and peace of mind.
- Deterrence: The presence of security cameras can act as a deterrent to potential burglars and vandals, potentially reducing the chances of break-ins and property damage.
- Real-Time Monitoring: Security systems provide continuous surveillance, enabling an immediate response to any suspicious activity.
- Enhanced Safety: Security can help ensure household safety by monitoring high-risk areas, such as entrances and gardens.
- Remote Access: Many modern security systems offer remote viewing capabilities, so the property can be checked on from anywhere using a smartphone, device or computer. This can be helpful where someone is vulnerable and needs support from others to monitor the security of their property.
Things to Consider
- Suitability: Different cameras have different functions so it's important to compare and find the right one for what is needed. The effectiveness of a security system depends on the quality of the cameras, High-definition (HD) cameras give clearer footage.
- Installation: A specialist firm might be needed to install a full security system, smart cameras or basic security cameras are usually easier to set up, look into installation requirements before purchasing and think about who will do this.
- Cost and value for money: The initial installation and maintenance of security systems can be expensive, smart cameras can be a more cost effective option. Consider the long-term benefits versus the upfront costs. Think about whether there are any ongoing costs, such as a subscription or cloud storage. What would happen if something went wrong with the system would a specialist be needed to fix it. Is there a warranty and what is the customer service like?
- Privacy: Think about whether the camera records any sound or video. Who would have access to these recordings or to the live feed? Check that the company who provides it complies with UK data laws. Does the person whose house it is understand what it does and who has access to the recordings or live video and can they make a decision about whether they want this? If they don't it will need to be considered whether it's in their best interests. Cameras should not record outside of the person's own private property. Some cameras allow field of vision to be set up but if this isn't possible signs may need to be displayed.
