What can it be used for?

A device that can be placed in the home to play reminders when the sensor is activated by movement, for example, someone walking past it.

Search for 'sensor based memo minder' online.

Benefits

  • Increased Independence: The memo minder can be placed near to where someone needs to be reminded of something with a recorded message so that they are reminded without needing help from another person. One example of how this could be used would be for it to be placed near to the door with a message reminding the person to lock the door.
  • Accessibility: These are usually devices which have batteries and work through movement sensors, they are relatively low cost and usually easy to set up.
  • Customisable: The message can usually be changed to suit the person who will be using it and what they need to be reminded of. The message can be recorded in a familiar voice of either the person themself or someone they know.

Things to Consider

  • Message Length: One message can be played and this is usually around 10-20 seconds long so think whether this would be enough time.
  • Voice used: Is the person recording the message familiar to the person using the device, if not will this startle them?
  • Sound Quality: Check how loud the volume will be and whether the sound quality is good. Will this be heard in the environment it will be used in or if the person has difficulty hearing?
  • Installation: Does it need mounting on a wall or is there somewhere it can be put like a shelf? Consider where it is placed as this will go off every time someone walks past it. Some memo minders can be set to only play the message at certain times of day so if reminders are only needed between specific times look for one that does this.
  • Battery Life: How often will the batteries need replacing and who will do this?
  • Purpose needed for: These cannot be used for medication reminders as they are activated each time movement is detected. If the person experiences auditory hallucinations these may not be suitable.
