Smoke Alarm / CO2 Detector

I want information about...

  • home safety

What can it be used for?

A smart smoke alarm or Carbon Monoxide (CO2) detector can be linked to a monitoring centre through a telecare base unit or there are standalone smart detectors which link to an app which can be downloaded on a mobile phone or tablet.

These can be purchased at some shops such as hardware or DIY shops which sell standard smoke or Carbon Monoxide (CO2) detectors or you can search on the internet for 'smoke alarm' or 'CO2 detector linked to a monitoring system' or 'smart smoke alarm or CO2 detector'.

Benefits

  • Increased independence: Where there are risks of fire or of a person not getting help if there was a fire these devices can help people to continue to live at home on their own safely for longer by helping to manage these risks.
  • Enhanced safety: There are different options that could increase safety. The versions that link to a monitoring centre can automatically alert someone if they are triggered meaning that the person will receive help even if they aren't able to call for it themselves. Smart versions connect to an app so an alert is given which someone can receive if they aren't at home or this alert could go to another person who could ensure that help is received.

Things to Consider

  • Preventing a fire or CO2 leak is better than detecting one when it happens, keep appliances serviced and in good condition. If there are increased risks of fire then a fire safety check would be a good idea: Home Fire Safety Visit – Online Home Fire Safety Check - Lincolnshire County Council
  • Maintenance: Consider battery life and who will check they are still working. Smart versions will usually send notifications to the app when batteries are getting low.
  • Compatibility: Check they work with existing devices. If it will be linked to a telecare system is it compatible? If it will be linked to a smart phone check the app will be compatible with the phone owned.
  • Connectivity: They rely on Wi-Fi or telecare systems for additional features. Consider what would happen if there was a problem with Wi-Fi or the network.
  • Privacy: If you chose a smart version, what data is collected and how is it used?
  • Cost and Value for Money: these can be more expensive than traditional models. Consider any warranty and customer support provided.
