Using technology to improve wellbeing, live independently and stay safer

We use technology such as kettles, lights, and televisions every day in a variety of ways to improve our lives. Technology is advancing and becoming more available and simpler to use. This means that there are increased opportunities to use it to be happier, healthier, safer and more independent. Everyday technology such as smart speakers and smart phones can be used to make your life easier. Technology can also be used to overcome challenges relating to health conditions and disabilities.

Technology can help you to:

  • Stay independent with day to day living tasks
  • Have more choice and control over when, where, and how to complete everyday tasks
  • Remain safer in your home and community
  • Access services in the community
  • Stay in contact with other people and take part in social activities
  • Be more active
  • Access information more easily

Sometimes technology is specifically designed for people who have care and support needs. You may have heard this referred to as “care technology”, “assistive technology” or “assistive equipment”. Solutions range from an app that can be added to your mobile phone through to sophisticated monitoring devices that learn routines and send alerts if something changes. These solutions could be in the form of telecare devices such as a lifeline or sensors connected to a monitoring centre or can be standalone pieces of equipment.

If you are planning to use technology to help manage a health condition, it is important to seek advice from a specialist organisation or your health professional.
