Council Tax Support

Council Tax Support can help to reduce your council tax bill based on your circumstances, such as income, savings, household members, and your Council Tax band. Each council has its own criteria, so it is important to check with your local council to find out if you may be eligible and if so what your specific reduction would be.

You may be eligible if you:

  • Have a low income or low earnings
  • Are responsible for council tax
  • Have savings under £16,000 (different rules for those over 60)
  • Receive Universal Credit

Your eligibility depends on:

  • Household income, including savings, pensions, and your partner’s income
  • Whether children or other adults live with you
  • Benefit entitlement

Use a benefits calculator for an estimate, or contact the benefits team for more information.

You will need to contact your local council to apply. If you are unsure which council to check, you can go to Apply for Council Tax Reduction - GOV.UK and put in your postcode, and you will be directed to your local council.
