Pension Credit

Pension Credit is a benefit for people over State Pension age, aimed at increasing your income. It also gives access to extra benefits, like a free TV licence for those over 75 (from 2020). With recent changes to the Pension Credit rules, we understand this might be worrying for people of pension age.

The rules for Pension Credit can be complicated, but here’s a simple guide for people of State Pension age (currently 66 or older):

  • If you're single and your total weekly income is under £218, you’re likely eligible. If it’s under £235, you may still qualify.
  • If you're a couple, both of pension age, and your total weekly income is under £333, you’re likely eligible. If it’s under £350, you may still qualify.

The income threshold is higher if you receive certain disability benefits or have caring responsibilities, so it’s worth checking if that applies to you.

The quickest way to apply for Pension Credit is by phone. A friend or family member can call for you, but you must be there during the call.
