Running heating and hot water systems make up a big proportion of what we spend on our power bills, so it is important that your boiler is working as efficiently as possible. It is important that you have your boiler serviced regularly (yearly is recommended) and that this service is carried out by a qualified engineer. For gas boilers (which are installed in many homes in the UK) look for a Gas Safe engineer. Keep an eye on your boiler pressure, bleed radiators (if possible) and you might be able to set a lower flow temperature to improve efficiency and reduce costs. If you are not sure how to do these things, your engineer should be able to advise you. Make sure you also have a carbon monoxide detector and fire alarm installed to alert you to any problems.

£-££ A boiler service should be relatively cheap, however, it may cost more if any problems are identified or if additional work needs carrying out. Consider investing in a reputable maintenance/repair plan or insurance to minimise potential one-off expensive repair bills.

£-£££ If you have a problem with your boiler, the cost of repair will depend on the issue.  Replacing a boiler can be expensive, and you may want to think about changing to a different heating system if your boiler needs replacing.
