Appliances and energy efficiency
Efficiency ratings for appliances tell you how much power or water an item uses. These range from A (the most efficient) to G (the least efficient). Some of the rating labels also have other information on them, such as noise level. If you are purchasing new appliances, then A rated items are likely to be the most energy efficient and cost-effective over their life span.
When buying new appliances, you may need to balance the cost of the item (higher rated items may cost more) over the potential long-term savings, particularly for items you use most often. When buying new items, you also need to think about the size you need: for example, if someone who is living on their own buys a family sized dishwasher and runs it when it is half full, they may be wasting energy and money, when a smaller version could do the same job with less energy use.
