Louth Area of Sanctuary exists to welcome and support people fleeing conflict. We have a team of volunteers who befriend and support people arriving in Louth and surrounding areas. Since 2014 we have provided support and befriending to asylum seekers and refugees arriving from many countries; and since 2022 we have worked closely with Ukrainian people arriving under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, and their hosts. The project is administered by a voluntary committee, and we have many friends and partners in the local community, who offer practical help and donations including tickets, events, and resources.
Our work is currently funded by voluntary donations from members of the public, and by a Social Isolation Grant from ELDC.
The Welcome Club meets in Louth every Tuesday morning, providing donations of food and clothing, a hot snack, and support and signposting provided by volunteers.
Our volunteer teachers run an English class for beginners, in Louth Library, every Wednesday from 1 - 2pm. Support in accessing more advanced classes is provided.
We organise a programme of cultural activities, arts and crafts, sports and leisure, depending on the availability of funds and volunteers, to help our guests to connect with local people, and with one another.
