Heating systems: heat pumps

Heat pumps are heating systems that work on electricity. They absorb heat from the ground or from the air (even in cold weather) and amplify this, using this heat to warm homes. Heat pumps are more efficient than gas boilers and can use electricity generated from renewable sources, so they can help cut both heating bills and carbon emissions. Ground source heat pumps tend to be more efficient but cost more to install and require space to dig either a bore hole or horizontal system in the ground outside. All heat pumps require some indoor space to house a hot water cylinder. If you are thinking of installing a heat pump, you will need to make sure that your home is suitable for one, for example, making sure that your home is well insulated to minimise heat loss (though this is important no matter what your heating system). You may be able to get financial help to install a heat pump and/or insulation. 

Cost

£££ Installing a heat pump is expensive, however, there are potential savings on energy costs in the long-term.
